The arrival of fall may mean we’re saying goodbye to longer days, green leaves and summer produce, but depriving a self-proclaimed basic of its avocado toast just isn’t an option. Like mimosas, hashes and pancakes, the beloved breakfast dish is now ingrained in Sunday brunch culture, which means it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
But the change of seasons doesn’t mean you have to stick to your favorite warm-weather iterations, like a garnish of arugula, cherry tomatoes, or sliced radishes. There are plenty of ways to enhance and elevate your standard avocado toast so that it can sit nicely next to a gourd or even a Christmas tree while still offering flavors of autumn par excellence.
Check out five quick tips for transporting your favorite weekend staple into the rest of 2021 and beyond.
Add seasonal crunch
There are dozens of fall ingredients that can add a wonderfully crunchy element to your avocado toast, but my two favorites are roasted pumpkin seeds for a savory option and pomegranate seeds for the sweet. While they are fantastic on their own with toast and sliced or mashed avocado, the former is delicious with feta brine and the latter with the crispness of goat cheese. Go for vegan varieties of both options if you’re aiming to keep things super healthy (#CantRelate during cuddle season) and dairy free.
Pour over the pumpkin
Reheat the canned pumpkin puree on a stovetop and stir in some of your favorite spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are safe options). Spread a thin layer of your mixture on toast, top with avocado, then drizzle with a sweet element like maple syrup and a salty indulgence like crispy bacon. It’s all about balance, much like pairing an Ugg boot with an oversized hoodie, so apply that same rule to your kitchen and you are guaranteed a successful result.
Make it expensive
It’s officially truffle season! While you can certainly shave off the white or black varieties of the expensive mushroom on your standard avo bread, I much prefer a mash or pate. These are typically store bought and mixed with olive oil, along with proven favorites from brands like La Rustichella and Borgo de ‘Medici. Take it a step further by adding decadent crème fraîche (mostly sour cream, but with a higher fat content) and caviar for an oceanic bite.
Nothing is more heartwarming than the warm and inviting spices of Asian cuisine, especially those found in Indian and Thai cuisine that pair harmoniously with a touch of citrus, like lime juice. Since avocado already provides a creamy base that can withstand heat, salt and spiciness, home cooks can easily experiment by adding ingredients like roasted turmeric chickpeas with tahini or even vindaloo tofu. . There is no reason not to creatively integrate international specialties into a very basic dish. If you’re still hesitant to travel abroad, get inspired by bringing these exciting flavors to your own kitchen.
Never underestimate an herb
Images of summer’s blossoming basil, mint, and parsley plants may still be prominent, but there are a handful of fresh herbs that do well in cooler temperatures as well. Consider a simple avocado toast mix with chopped or julienned chives, thyme, sage, and tarragon, which you can grow and pluck to add peppery, onion notes to your avocado. and weed worthy of drool. It may sound simple in execution, but the flavors and aromas of these greens dominate the dish and are a welcome departure from heavier alternatives like fried eggs, hummus or smoked salmon. Try to mix a few together for a truly exciting experience for your palate.
