The moment a sting caught a suspected child sexual predator who traveled 800km to meet a young girl he treated online has been shown in police footage.
The man, 66, from Yallourn North in eastern Victoria, got out of his station wagon wearing track pants and UGG boots in a car park in western Sydney on Friday morning, only to be nabbed by police in NSW.
Police say he drove from Victoria after believing he had arranged sex with a girl under the age of 10, with the girl’s mother in online chats that had been going on for almost two months.

Instead, the man was speaking to detectives from Strike Force Trawler, in the NSW Police Child Sex Crimes Unit.

He was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was charged with using a transport service to recruit someone under the age of 16 for sex.
He was denied bail and was due to appear in court on Saturday.
‘In May 2022 Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Strike Force Trawler investigators began an online dialogue with a man from Yallourn North in Victoria,’ a statement from NSW Police said.
“Police will allege in court that the man believed he was talking with the mother of a girl under the age of 10 and had engaged in sexually explicit conversations about acts he wished to perform on the child.
“It will further be alleged that the man arranged to meet the mother and daughter and drove away from Victoria for the purpose of a sexual encounter in New South Wales.”

CEIU Chief Detective Inspector Chris Goddard urged parents to speak openly with their children about the dangers posed by online predators.
“For young people, engaging with people they don’t know on an online platform can put them at risk,” Mr Goddard said.
“Our priority is to protect children from any type of harm, and we will always use all the resources at our disposal to locate anyone using the Internet for criminal purposes.”
