Get to know Duckie Thot, who is set for his best year yet
Duckie Thot is set to celebrate his next birthday this weekend the only way she knows how: by ticking off more career goals and working on wishlist projects. Not that she would have done it otherwise! The determined Australian model is at the forefront of UGG’s very first clothing campaign, for Fall / Winter 21, alongside Maye Musk, Kim Petras, Fernanda Ly and Parris Goebel. The bubbly runway regular, who has 1.3 million Instagram followers to applaud her success, showed up in style to celebrate the campaign with her co-stars at the Waverly Inn last night. Naturally, we grabbed the in-demand mod for a hot minute to hear how it all started and what’s to come.
What was your first memory of UGG?
My first memory of UGG dates back to my childhood. It was, and still is, such a great brand. When I was a kid, everyone wanted UGG!
Do you remember having a certain pair that you wore all the time?
It was the classics! The brown boots and the ones you could fold up, the big ones so you could see the inside was sheepskin. It has always been a staple piece to have growing up. Everyone knew about UGG boots and if you had any, I mean everyone respected you!
Do you remember anything that makes you cringe now that you carried with them?
When I was around 16, I used to wear tight black leggings and a short puffer jacket!
How do you feel with that kind of history and association of being in the countryside now and seeing yourself up there?
It’s so nice to have a brand that I’m passionate about and that I really love. It’s genuine and it’s not a lie – it’s a brand that my friends and I really wore. And it’s good to be able to represent [that past] and where I come from and knowing that I have a personal history with a brand makes things more valuable and makes working with the brand more special. Being in the countryside feels personal and close to home to me because I have a real story with it.
Speaking of house, is your family still in Australia?
My family is still there; I saw them about three months ago. But it was only for a short time that I went to work. I spent a month there and had to do a two-week quarantine. It wasn’t the best of times, but I was glad I got to visit my family.
How was your Fashion Week?
It was good! I hadn’t had a visa for about a year and a half so it was great to come back recently and see my peers, see designers and attend events. You know, these are all people that I’ve worked with since I moved to New York, so it was really nice to reconnect and have that intimacy with people in the fashion industry.
And you walked for LaQuan Smith! It must have been an incredible sight at the top of the Empire State. How was it ?
LaQuan is a very good friend of mine and I really love him. It’s so nice to see his clothes every season – he’s such a determined designer. It’s also very nice to see all the girls behind the scenes!
Who are you particularly friendly with?
Lots of girls, we see each other all the time! I can not tell [just a few]. It’s always so exciting when you get backstage, because you never know who’s walking. I mean, you see pictures at the fittings, but they are never confirmed. So going behind the scenes is so nice, and you are always so surprised. Like I said, I’ve been gone a year and a half so seeing all of my fashionable peers after COVID again is such a blessing, and we had some phenomenal women parading in the show.
Is there a model who has been good at giving you behind-the-scenes advice?
Models don’t really talk about it behind the scenes, I think we mostly talk more openly at dinner and in private! We have more to say there. Behind the scenes are good vibes and a good time. We can celebrate all the other women doing phenomenal things and their campaigns that we have seen walking on Fifth Avenue is like seeing friends appear on the street. It’s always great to just congratulate your peers. And I think the biggest opportunity to do that is always backstage because we’re 60 to 80 so you really see everyone.
I was also wondering about the LaQuan show and the poodles. It must have been fun!
They had them on another floor, in another section, with people looking after them while we were backstage. It was really nice ‚I saw them there but I had no idea what was going on! I didn’t know they were part of the show, but it was nice to walk
by something different.
What else do you have to come?
Wow, it’s been a year! I just think big things are happening. So many people are determined to find different ways to create rather than the traditional ways before. And it’s really exciting. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m having a great time connecting with creatives who are excited about their craft and really step out of their own comfort zone, which I’m also doing right now, with designers. , photographers and stylists. I really think I came back to New York for such amazing opportunities. I check off a few things that I’ve always had on my bucket list, and it currently is!
Are you doing something for your birthday this weekend !?
It’s in three days! In fact, I’m going to work on my birthday, but I’m going to be working with one of my dream clients; someone I have always wanted to work with. You know my last birthdays, I worked and I am really grateful to be able to do what I love and also to work with people that I have always admired, so it’s me on my birthday!
This is the best gift, I guess!
Yes, it is a great gift for me every year.
