Molly Goddard’s Ugg Maximalist Boots Have Landed
Molly Goddard desperately wanted a pair of Ugg boots as a teenager, but the sheepskin gods never blessed her with a pair. Either way, the London queen of tulle dresses has collaborated with the American surfer brand on a line of comfy slippers, which pushes her feminine design sensibilities to the max.
The capsule collection of three shoe styles, featuring a floral appliquéd boot, plush slipper and monster platform, was shown at Goddard’s Spring / Summer 2021 presentation at London Phygital Fashion Week and broadcast on Youtube. “Flowers and flourishes are my choice to spice up something,” says Goddard, who road tested the vertiginous platforms while stomping his studio. “They are so tall but so easy to wear!” she promises. “I love the strength and solidity of the outer shoe, then you slip it on and there’s a surprise touch of fur color on the inside just for you!”
Goddard admits that there is “a much needed sense of humor in the designs,” which play with texture, color and size. “It’s always fun to collaborate,” she says delighted with the experience of working with the shoe giant. “This is an opportunity to use resources and skills that we don’t have in-house. Shoes are notoriously difficult to make and produce, so when you are given the flexibility to design with few limitations, it’s hard to say no. “
The process was also an opportunity for one of the capital’s brightest stars – whose rise has been stratospheric thanks to Rihanna whirling around her work – to learn how big business works. “We are a team of nine people, realizing the scale of an operation like Deckers [Ugg’s parent company] was fascinating, ”she explains. “There are so many moving parts.”
For Molly Goddard fans who covet her maximalist dresses, fuzzy pink and green slip-ons are a welcome entry point. Goddard recommends wearing the flower bouquet print boots with a short cotton dress, in line with the Ugg x Molly Goddard campaign, which was designed by Alice Goddard and photographed by Theo Sion with cinematography by Eoin McLoughlin. Expect to see Goddard girls floating around in the spring in a well-fitted style. As Molly attests, “This is the most comfortable thing I have ever worn …”
